Michigan Communication Specialists Advance Individuals with Disabilities
Michigan’s Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Specialists help individuals with disabilities (Birth to 26 years) advance their communication levels. Specialists use gestures, writing, and advanced technology, including speech-generating devices and apps. These professionals work closely with speech-language pathologists to identify the most suitable tools for each individual, helping them succeed in school and adulthood.
The AAC professional uses a variety of techniques and tools to help the individual express thoughts, wants and needs, feelings, and ideas, including the following:
- manual signs
- gestures
- fingerspelling
- tangible objects
- line drawings
- picture communication boards and letter boards
- speech-generating devices
Becoming a Michigan AAC Professional
The AAC specialization requires a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program (map). After completing a Master’s degree, you apply for a State of Michigan license to practice.Â
Additionally, earning the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is key to demonstrating your expertise and advancing your career.Â
If you want to make a difference in the lives of individuals with speech or language challenges, a career as an AAC professional in special education is a perfect fit.
