A new Pre-Kindergarden (PK-12) Special Education Generalist Credential was needed to streamline special education preparation and credentialing so future special educators have a clearer, more flexible pathway into the profession.
Outcome to Date:
The PK-12 Special Education Generalist credential standards were created and approved by the Michigan State Board of Education. This helps reduce barriers created by categorical endorsements and gives preparation programs a broader, more practical pathway for preparing future special educators.
A new, more formal, statewide training platform to prepare Michigan’s paraeducators needed to provide more consistent, high-quality personnel.
Outcome to Date:
The Michigan Association of Administrators of Special Education (MAASE) developed a train-the-trainer model. MAASE now has nearly 400 trainers statewide to train existing personnel as well as new people entering the paraeducator field, giving them more confidence and support.

Outcome to Date:
Programs such as Paraeducator to Special Education Teacher pathways help working paraeducators continue in the field while preparing for teacher licensure. College Programs include Alma and Mid Michigan College, Eastern Michigan University, and Wayne State University.
Expand higher education options for school psychology programs, including more flexible and online options.
Outcome to Date:
The Michigan legislature allotted $1 million to expand school psychology training programs, with grants awarded to Western Michigan University and Andrews University. They are accepting applicants for Fall 2027.
Offer a new alternate route to Special Education Administrator Credentialing to ease the accessibility to leadership jobs.

MAASE and MASA (Michigan Association of Superintendents & Administrators) created the new alternate route to special education administrators.
Build a new School Administrator Training on special education framework including IDEA, FAPE, inclusive leadership, specially designed instruction, discipline, communication, and parent partnerships.

The collaborative efforts MAASE, Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principal Association (MEMSPA), and Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) developed leadership learning modules and launched Cohort 1 program for school leadership
