COMS specialize in helping individuals with visual impairments travel safely, confidently, and independently throughout their daily lives.
Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists in Schools
School-based certified orientation and mobility specialists identify the needs of individuals with disabilities (Birth to 26 years) and create training plans to help them move throughout the classroom and outdoor spaces.
These Michigan specialists provide their services in different ways, from infancy to adulthood. They work with children as young as preschool, teaching foundational skills that lay the groundwork for independent travel. As individuals progress, COMS continues to support their growth, introducing more complex concepts like street crossing, public transportation use, and route planning.
The COMS often uses assistive technology to help assess and advance the learning of individuals with disabilities (Birth to 26 years). Tech can include smart boards, interactive TV, and apps on phones and tablets so individuals can communicate back and forth with the specialist.

Specialists work closely with individuals, their families, and other educational professionals to integrate orientation and mobility techniques into daily routines.
