Some students face challenges that far exceed the standard obstacles of the average student. Individuals may face a wide range of challenges that school social workers can help address. These include disabilities (Birth to 26 years), unstable home environments, and experiences with trauma or crisis.
How Michigan School Social Workers Can Help
The job of a school social worker encompasses a range of responsibilities:
- Individual and Group Counseling: sessions may be offered to individuals experiencing challenges at home, school, and in their personal lives.
- Case Management: Develop intervention plans tailored to the individual’s needs, incorporating family involvement and coordinating services with external agencies, such as mental health providers, social services, or community organizations.
- Collaboration and Consultation: School social workers collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other professionals to develop strategies for supporting an individual’s academic and social-emotional growth.
- Advocacy: Address bullying and discrimination issues, and promote policies and programs that foster a favorable school climate.
- Crisis Intervention: Offer support and intervention during times of crisis, such as incidents of violence, natural disasters, or personal emergencies that affect individuals or the broader school community.
- Prevention and Education: Promote positive social-emotional development and prevent issues such as substance abuse, bullying, and dropout. Hold workshops or educational programs for individuals, parents, and staff on conflict resolution, stress management, and healthy relationships.
