Speech and language disorders can make it difficult for individuals to understand their environment. These challenges also affect peer interactions and academic success. Here’s how SLPs address these challenges:
- Improving Listening Skills: Enhancing the ability to process and understand spoken language.
- Enhancing Verbal Interaction: Teaching individuals how to express themselves clearly and effectively, verbally or through sign language.
- Developing Reading and Comprehension: Helping individuals improve their reading skills and understanding of written material.
- Building Vocabulary: Expanding the range of words individuals use and understand.
- Improving Social Skills: Teaching appropriate social interactions and communication cues.

Speech and language pathologists also address the physical aspects of speech production, including respiration, phonation, articulation, and resonance, and work to create custom plans that may include language therapy, alternative augmentative communication strategies, or other techniques to facilitate better communication.
