Expanding the Rural Michigan Teacher Pipeline
The Michigan Consortium for Addressing Rural Education Expansion and Retention (or MiCAREER) gives current school staff and aspiring educators, including special educators who work with individuals with disabilities (Birth to 26 years) in rural communities, a no-cost pathway to Michigan teacher certification.
Funded by a $15 million grant from the Michigan Department of Education, MiCAREER brings together universities, intermediate school districts, and rural districts to recruit, prepare, and retain highly qualified teachers in the state’s most underserved areas.
In 2024, Central Michigan University (CMU) was selected to lead the MiCAREER Resource Hub, partnering with:
- Eastern Michigan University (EMU)
- Michigan State University (MSU)
- Northern Michigan University (NMU)
- Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU)
Together, they provide customized certification pathways, professional development, and career support —specifically designed to expand access to Michigan Teacher Certification in rural communities.
According to Dr. Paula Lancaster, CMU Provost and Executive Vice President, “By providing these resources, MiCAREER helps ensure that rural students receive a quality education by improving the recruitment, certification, and retention of qualified teachers in their communities.”
Who Can Participate
- Individuals who have completed or nearly completed educator preparation coursework in Michigan or another state but are not yet certified.
- Individuals who have worked successfully in rural schools under temporary credentials.
- Veteran educators seeking to expand their credentials.
What MiCAREER Covers
Eligible participants receive:
- Full tuition and required fees for approved teacher certification programs at partner universities.
- Access to mentoring, test preparation, and career counseling.
- Ongoing professional development to support teacher retention.
MiCAREER supports a variety of teaching roles, including Special Education Teacher certification.
Becoming a Special Education Teacher through MiCAREER
In Michigan, you must first hold or be working toward a valid Michigan teaching certificate before adding a Special Education endorsement.
MiCAREER supports both:
- Aspiring teachers who need to earn their initial teaching certificate and complete special education endorsement coursework.
- Current certified teachers who want to add a special education endorsement to expand their qualifications.
Special Education endorsements available through MiCAREER include:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Cognitive Impairment (CI)
- Learning Disabilities (LD)
- Emotional Impairment (EI)
These credentials qualify educators to serve individuals with disabilities, Birth to 26 years, and are directly linked to several of the 12 high-demand careers on: OPTIMISE.education
