Novi Combines Unified Practices and Emerging Technology
Novi CSD celebrates becoming a Unified Champion School District
Novi Community School District (NCSD) is redefining what it means to support individuals with disabilities, Birth to 26 years. By blending a culture of inclusion through its Unified Champion District model and forward-thinking technology strategies led by its special education team, Novi is setting a statewide standard for how collaboration and innovation can strengthen every learner’s experience.
These communication tools are known as Assistive Technology, and demand for them in Wayne County continues to grow every year. Currently, there are over 2,300 devices in the hands of students. That’s why the Wayne Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) recently overhauled how schools access them.

Building Connections Through Unified Programs
Novi is Michigan’s first Unified Champion School District, a designation earned through its partnership with Special Olympics Michigan. Novi High School was also named a National Banned Unified Champion School, a distinction that honors its student leadership and commitment to bringing every learner into school life.
“The initiative connects students with and without disabilities through athletics, peer leadership, and community events that promote respect and teamwork,” said Shailee Patel, NCSD’s Director of Special Education Programs and Innovation. “Earning National Banner Recognition means our school is being celebrated as a place where students with and without intellectual disabilities learn, play, and lead together — building a culture of respect, acceptance, and unity for all.”
At Novi High School, programs such as Unified soccer, basketball, and bocce have become integral parts of campus life. These activities allow students to build friendships, communication skills, and school pride while learning to work together toward shared goals.
For Novi’s special educators, these efforts extend classroom learning. Teachers and paraeducators use Unified sports and leadership activities to reinforce daily instruction in social-emotional growth, teamwork, and communication – all skills that help students succeed both in school and in the community.

Technology That Strengthens Educators
Innovation is also transforming how Novi’s staff manages the complex demands of special education. At the 2025 Michigan Virtual AI Summit, Patel co-led a session titled “Innovative Approaches: Leveraging AI to Support Special Ed Staff”. The session outlined practical ways in which artificial intelligence tools can reduce administrators’ workload and support individualized Instruction.
Patel emphasized that technology should free teachers to focus on direct work with students. Her team is piloting adaptive communication platforms, progress-tracking systems, and AI-assisted documentation tools to make individualized plans more efficient and responsive to student progress.
Collaboration Across the District
Novi’s special education leadership, co-directed by Patel and Amanda Squires, oversees programs that serve
students from early childhood through age 26. Their teams coordinate professional learning for special educators, paraeducators, and therapists, covering topics such as assistive technology, behavior supports, and transition services.
Advancing Opportunities for Every Learner
Novi’s approach to special education demonstrates that progress happens when districts invest in both students and staff. Unified athletics strengthen community and confidence, while technology innovations help teachers and paraeducators dedicate more time to instruction.
As other districts look to modernize their own special education systems, Novi provides a practical blueprint: build strong programs, support the professionals behind them, and allow every learner to grow.
