Navigating school life presents unique challenges for the blind and visually impaired. That’s why school-based certified orientation and mobility specialists (COMS) have such an important job. COMS specialize in helping individuals with visual impairments travel safely, confidently, and independently throughout their daily lives.
Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists in Schools
School-based certified orientation and mobility specialists assess the needs of individuals with disabilities (Birth to 26 years). They create training plans that help students move safely through classrooms, hallways, and outdoor spaces.
These Michigan specialists provide their services in different ways, from infancy to adulthood. They work with children as young as preschool, teaching foundational skills that lay the groundwork for independent travel. As individuals progress, COMS continues to support their growth by introducing more complex concepts, such as street crossing, public transportation use, and route planning.
The COMS often uses assistive technology to help assess and advance the learning of individuals with disabilities (Birth to 26 years). Technology can include smartboards, interactive TV, and apps on phones and tablets, allowing individuals to communicate back and forth with the specialist.

Specialists work closely with individuals, their families, and other educational professionals to integrate orientation and mobility techniques into daily routines.
These specialists provide hands-on instruction, environmental awareness training, and mobility skill development. They help individuals move confidently through the world—regardless of visual limitations.
