For families in the Ottawa Area, the Ottawa Area Center stands as one of the region’s most vital educational resources. Operated by the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District (OAISD) in Holland, the center serves students with significant cognitive impairments and multiple disabilities, from preschool through age 26. Its work touches nearly every local school district in the area.
The Ottawa Area Center’s mission is clear: to help students gain the academic, social, and daily living skills they need to thrive in school, at home, and in the community. Every program, whether in early childhood, transition services, or specialized classrooms, is designed to build independence and confidence step by step.

Serving Students Across Ottawa County
The Ottawa Area Center provides a full range of programs and services for students who require more intensive support than local schools can offer. These include classrooms for students with moderate and severe cognitive impairments, as well as early childhood special education and transition services for young adults preparing for work and community life.
Students are referred to the center by their home districts after careful evaluation and collaboration between parents, teachers, and OAISD specialists. Once enrolled, each student receives an Individualized Education Program (IEP) tailored to specific goals in communication, academics, and functional living. With a low student-to-staff ratio, classrooms include certified special educators, paraeducators, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, behavioral techs, and nurses. The team approach ensures consistent attention to each learner’s needs throughout the school day.

Transition and Independence
One of the center’s most impactful areas is its transition program, which supports students ages 18 to 26 as they prepare for adult life. Instruction focuses on community participation, workplace readiness, and independent living skills. Students practice tasks such as using public transportation, managing money, preparing meals, and communicating effectively in different settings.
Partnerships with local businesses and organizations provide students with practical experience in real-world work environments. These experiences are structured, supervised, and aligned with each student’s IEP goals, providing opportunities to develop confidence and learn skills that can lead to future employment.
